Take out the tunnels!
In Mondays edition of Israel today a headline read; “BREAKING: IDF Uncover Hezbollah Offensive Tunnel.” The article went on to say; “IDF troops located a cross-border attack tunnel in the Lebanese southern area of Kafr Kela on Tuesday morning. At this time, the IDF is carrying out an operational and engineering process to neutralize the tunnel,” an army spokesperson said Tuesday. The tunnel originates in the southern portion of the Lebanese town of Kafr Kela. The tunnel crosses over into Israeli territory and is believed to have been dug for use in an upcoming terror attack on Israeli targets. “The Hezbollah terror organization, which is responsible for digging the cross-border attack tunnels, continues its activity that is supported and funded by Iran, to establish its terror infrastructure against Israeli civilians,” an IDF spokesperson said.
What King David did
In the book of Samuel we are told that King David captured the Jebusite City and called it the City of David. How did King David and the Israelites take out the Jebusites? We read where; “The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites, who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” they thought, “David cannot get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David. On that day David had said, “Anyone who conquers the Jebusites will have to use the water shaft to reach those ‘lame and blind’ who are David’s enemies.” That is why they say, “The ‘blind and lame’ will not enter the palace.” (2 Samuel 5:6-8)
The blind and the lame?
King David and his men came to the Jebusite fortress. These Jebusites were proud and arrogant and militant and thought they could never be taken out. They thought they were superior to the Israelites and made no apologies for this. They even taunted David and his men. They were proud, boastful and arrogant and militant just as Hezbollah and Hamas is today. To attack the fortress head on would not work as it was on a hill and well-fortified and built over the Gihon Springs which supplied water to the city. King David in effect said; “You Jebusites think we the Israelites are like the lame and the blind that have no power, well we will see about that!” So King David made a strategic decision to send his men up through the water shaft under the city to take the city. This was the Jebusites ‘Achilles heel.’ Well the supposedly ‘blind and lame’ took out the Jebusites. King David then built the City of David. The water shaft being the Gihon Springs would not only provide running water for the inhabitants of the city but also fresh running water for the sacrifices and offerings in Solomon’s Temple in the future which would be also built in the City of David.
Ferret them out!
The tunnel network of Hezbollah and Hamas is their weakest link. If the IDF want to effectively ‘paralyse’ these enemies of Israel then they need to go down onto the tunnels and ‘ferret out’ the Hezbollah and Hamas operatives and destroy their underground networks. Blocking the tunnels will not stop these antagonists from making more tunnels. Sending IDF commandos down into these tunnels is a very dangerous and difficult task and would take very brave and courageous combatants to do this but one that the IDF would be able to handle. Added to this the Israeli army robots would wreak havoc if they were sent into the tunnels. Either way the tunnels must be destroyed.
“Lock, stock and barrel”
Destroy the tunnels and you will destroy Hezbollah and Hamas! In taking out the tunnels these terrorists would not find themselves fighting ‘the blind and the lame’ at all but the formidable armies of the God of Israel. Take out the tunnels! Blow them up! Hit Hezbollah and Hamas hard where it will hurt the most! Destroy their line of supplies! Already Operation Northern Shield to neutralize the Hezbollah Tunnels has started but the Israelis need to really hit Hezbollah hard and the same goes for Hamas. Once King David’s men had gone up through the water shaft they were able to take out the Jebusites ‘lock, stock and barrel!’
God’s strategy
King David trusted in the LORD and always sought His guidance in a time of war and God gave him the strategy to defeat Israel’s enemies who were often stronger and more powerful. We are not told that David consulted the LORD concerning the Jebusite City but we do know that David walked with God and that He was with David wherever He went to fight Israel’s enemies.
As the psalmist wrote; “All you Israelites, trust in the LORD—He is their help and shield. House of Aaron, trust in the LORD—He is their help and shield. You who fear Him, trust in the LORD—He is their help and shield.” (Psalm 115:9-11)
If only the leaders in Israel would look to the LORD alone and to His Messiah Yeshua they would know where to attack and how to attack their enemies and through trusting in the LORD defeat their enemies at every turn!
