He Who Sits Enthroned in the Heavens

A time is coming when the nations will align themselves against God and against our Lord Jesus the Son of God His Anointed Messiah. At present we see the leaders of nations divided against each other but there is also a group of global billionaire elitists that are seeking to establish a world government that does not acknowledge God. On the other hand you have Islam spreading like a wildfire through the whole Middle-East and down into the African Continent with tentacles reaching into Europe and the western democracies hell-bent on establishing a resurrected caliphate to rule the world if it can. Macron in France, the newly elected leader of the European Union, wants to see a European Army formed within the Continent of Europe. Then there is Russia and China and Iran all seeking to expand their respective empires.

At the end of this present age according to God’s Word a coalition of nations will form to confront the people of God that will culminate in the siege of Jerusalem and the persecution of faithful New Covenant Bible believers. It will be an attack on God Himself. Satan is at work in the unseen spiritual realm and will incarnate himself in the man of sin who will establish an empire of global proportions and demand the worship and allegiance from every man, woman and child within the realm of its boundaries. It will be a re-enactment of the Tower of Babel where a global empire will seek to overthrow God.

Now in Psalm 2 we are told how things will be and how they will end. It is a prophetic Psalm. Now let’s look at this Psalm briefly.

(Vs.1-3) “Why are the nations (Gentiles) in an uproar And the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the Lord and against His Anointed (Messiah), saying, “Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!

In the Bible the word “Gentiles” can be applied to non-Jewish nations, but more so to those who do not know God, who are separate from the Messiah, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world (Ephesians 2:12). Today the nations are arrayed against God, against His Son our Lord Jesus, against God’s people and against His law. God Himself says that in seeking to devise a plan to overthrow His sovereignty that nations and their leaders are plotting a vain thing and that at the end it will all collapse around their ears and that big time!

We are also told that the rulers take counsel together to devise ways and means to overthrow God’s supreme right to rule over the nations He has created. Today the pagan world lies in the power of the wicked one and he controls the minds, the ambitions and the actions of the unsaved people in this world especially those in positions of political power. This world is one that casts off any restraint morally, ethically and spiritually and plunges into debauchery, hedonism, totalitarianism and tyranny over others. In this sense only “the god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of God’s Anointed Messiah, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4).

The god of this age is that “prince of the power of the air,” in that unseen spiritual realm within the atmosphere just above the surface of the earth which is his domain as he walks to and fro across the length and breadth of the earth working his murder and mayhem, killing, stealing and destroying anything he can that is godly, righteous true and just (Ephesians 2:2) (Job 1:7; 2:2) (John 10:10a). Even though the hearts of the unsaved in the world are in Satan’s hand he is still subject to the sovereignty of God. God still owns this planet and everything in it and the whole universe for that matter including Satan and his cohorts from Hades.

As we are told in God’s Word; “Our God is in the heavens; He does all that He pleases” (Psalm 115:3). And again it is written; “All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and He does according to His will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay His hand or say to Him, “What have you done?” (Daniel 4:35). And yet again we are told; “Whatever the Lord pleases, He does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps” (Psalm 135:6). As we also read; “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding” (Daniel 2:21). And again as the psalmist writes; “The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters” (Psalm 24:1). In light of these verses and many others in God’s Word we can see who is really in control! Now let’s continue.

(Vs.4-6) He who sits enthroned in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them. Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury, saying, “But as for Me, I have installed and consecrated My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”

When God laughs and scoffs at the vanity of man seeking to usurp His eternal supreme authority, His laughing and scoffing is true, pure and untainted, without partiality and grounded on justice, righteousness and holiness. His anger when displayed is awesome in its power and finality as we see in scripture when He dealt with the ancient pagan empires of Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome and when He ultimately deals with the empire of the man of sin and all global empires and kingdoms arrayed against His absolute authority.

When His anger flares against sin and rebellion His radiance is like the sunlight in its fullest strength and He has lightning bolts that flash from His hand wherein is the hiding place of His power (Habakkuk 3:4) (Job 36:32). We will see the effects of this power when men from every walk and station in life will seek to hide from His power when the Lord Jesus comes back to judge the earth. His wrath unleashed will be terrifying to those who have cast aside and trampled underfoot His law and commandments and flouted those laws with impunity (Revelation 6:15-17).

This is the God who never slumbers nor sleeps but watches over all He has created and watches over Israel and all of His chosen saints and their comings and their goings from this time forth and forever! (Psalm 121) What a God we have! Who can overcome Him? As Job declares; “I know that You can do all things and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted!” (Job 42:1-2). God has already installed and consecrated His Son the Lord Jesus as the king of kings and the Lord of Lords and ordained that He will sit on the throne of Israel in the Millennial Temple on the original sight of Mt Zion. He is now reigning in the heavenly unseen spiritual realm at the right hand of God His Father and upholding everything in the universe by the power of His word and is destined to come back again to rule and to reign on earth in sovereign power. And then we read;

(Vs. 7-9) “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. ‘You shall break them with a sceptre of iron; You shall shatter them like earthenware.’”

Here we have a conversation happening between God and His Son in the eternal unseen realm in the courts of heaven where time does not exist as it does down here. The Triune God agreed in perfect unity of mind and heart and will as one God that the Lord Jesus would take upon Himself a flesh and blood body which God the father would prepare in the womb of Mary and He would be one who would be conceived by the Holy Spirit and not by any human man. (Hebrews 10:5) (Luke 1:35). Once the Lord Jesus came into this world He would be fully human as well as fully divine and as a perfect man start to call upon God His Father.

In His first coming He would come as the suffering servant to die for sinners and to offer salvation from the power and penalty of sin. The second time He will come will be as the all-conquering King of King and Lord of Lords to inherit the nations and rule them with an iron sceptre and shatter all resistance to His sovereign power (Daniel 2:35; 44-45). As New Covenant believers we too are destined to co-reign with Him and with His rod of iron and along with Him dash the rebellious nations like pottery (Revelation 2:27). This is our future in the Messianic kingdom to come! And so we read…

(Vs.10-12) “Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges (rulers) of the earth. Worship and serve the Lord with reverence And rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may suddenly be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!”

Today God is warning the leaders of the nations. He is allowing the world to be racked with wars, earthquakes, famines, pestilence, and ethnic conflict within nations, spiritual deception and other ecological disasters to get the world’s attention. He wants all men to repent and to come to a knowledge of the truth as it is fully revealed in the Messiah our Lord Jesus but His time clock is about to strike midnight (2 Peter 3:9). The Day of the Lord is fast approaching with an increasing rapidity and just when people think that things are settling down sudden destruction will come upon the whole world like labour pains suddenly come upon a pregnant woman without warning and they will not escape! As we read in the Word of God; “For you are fully aware that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labour pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape” (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3).

If the leaders of the nations and the people over whom they rule in this world do not submit to the Lordship of the Messiah our Lord Jesus and seek after the law and commandments of God, and pay Him the homage due to Him, He will become very angry and deal out retribution and that without reprieve when He returns in great power and glory (Revelation 6:15-17). Only those who have sought refuge in Him and in His atoning and cleansing blood to rescue them from this present evil age and from the coming wrath will be truly and eternally blessed (Romans 5:9) (1 Thessalonians 1:10; 5:9).

The labour pains of their tribulation in this life for His names sake will be forgotten in the joy of the birth of the Kingdom of God on earth wherein will reign righteousness, joy, peace, justice, prosperity and where the surviving nations will be subject to the reign of the Messiah our Lord Jesus (Zechariah 14:16-21). Truly in that day the Lord will have installed His Son in the Millennial Temple on Mt Zion and the nations will be His! “The government will be upon his shoulders!” (Isaiah 9:6). Let us always remember what is written; “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe!” (Proverbs 18:10). It is always safe to trust the Lord! Let us always remember that it is He who sits enthroned in the Heavens!
